The golden ratio in a face
The golden ratio, often written φ (phi), is about 1.618. Renaissance artists and later beauty canons used it and simple fractions to describe a balanced face. The calculator checks the ratios a phone photo can measure fairly:
- Mouth to nose width: ideally 1.618, the classic golden ratio.
- Facial thirds: brow-to-nose and nose-to-chin should be about equal (1.0).
- Nose to eye gap: the nose is about as wide as the gap between the eyes (1.0).
Your face is more than its ratios. See your symmetry, your face shape, or rate your face out of 10.
FAQ
What is the golden ratio face?
The golden ratio is about 1.618. Classic beauty canons say some features of a face follow it, for example that the mouth is about 1.618 times as wide as the nose. A "golden ratio face" is one whose proportions sit close to these canons.
How does the golden ratio face calculator work?
It finds 468 points on your face in your browser, measures ratios such as mouth to nose width, the facial thirds and nose width to eye gap, and shows how close each one is to its ideal. Your golden ratio match is the average.
What is a good golden ratio score?
Most faces land between 70% and 90%. Nobody matches every canon, and many famous faces do not. A straight-on, eye-level photo gives the fairest reading.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Every ratio is measured on your device and your photo never leaves it.
Does the golden ratio decide beauty?
No. It is an old, fun rule of thumb. Studies find only a weak link between golden ratios and how attractive people are rated, so enjoy the numbers but do not take them to heart.
